Looking for help planning The Greatest Showman Halloween costumes?
Labor Day is over, and now it’s time to start thinking about Halloween costumes. Kidding. But really, I am not. I always recommend to start gathering and piecing together Halloween costumes around late August/ early September. I know that sounds kind of silly, but it gives you more time to make sure you have everything you need for a successful and smooth Halloween.
Our children have always been a fan of the family costumes, so I am going to ride it out with them as long as possible. Mom tip: try and let the kids pick the theme, and go from there. You will find them to be more flexible with who they are going to dress up as if you remind them that they actually picked the theme.
For 2018, the choice was simple. The kids knew without a doubt that we were going to be The Greatest Showman costumes. Although the movie came out in December 2017, we actually did not watch it until September 2018. We must have been hiding under a rock to miss this one! If you haven’t seen the movie – please do! It’s amazing, and has an incredible story line. Dave and I couldn’t believe that we hadn’t seen it sooner. We now have the entire soundtrack on repeat playing just about everywhere we go. There are SO MANY characters that you could do a large group costume exceeding the seven people that we included. Seriously the possibilities are endless for this theme!

COMPLETE LIST OF EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE GREATEST SHOWMAN COSTUMES
The Greatest Showman Costume: P.T. Barnum
Greatest Showman Costume | White Gloves Hat | Red Ribbon | Cane
Here is everything you need to create the Greatest Showman P.T. Barnum costume. This one was simple mamas. We already had a pair of white gloves from a previous dress up costume. Although the costume came with a hat (it was made of fabric and flimsy) we decided to head to the local party supply store for a basic plastic top hat. We then hot glued the red satin ribbon around the bottom. The baton is actually a walking cane that we found at the Halloween party store. I have linked them all here.

The Greatest Showman Costume: Anne Wheeler
Purple Leotard | Fabric Glue | Jewels | Complete Costume available on Amazon NOW! | Hula Hoop | Gold Spray Paint | Nude Tights | Jazz Shoes
Purple Leotard | Fabric Glue | Jewels Complete Costume available on Amazon | Hula Hoop | Gold Spray Paint | Nude Tights Jazz Shoes
This one required a little more work on my part, but no sewing! So that is still a win! I hopped onto Amazon and ordered a purple leotard. Once the leotard arrived, using fabric glue I put the jewels (available at local craft store) in a V shaped pattern across the front. I also attached a purple satin bow with fabric glue. Using the same purple ribbon, I created two armbands by cutting to length and then safety pinning together. The trapeze artist also requested a prop. So we took an old hula hoop (you can buy these from the Dollar Store during the summer months), and spray painted it with gold paint.
The wig was also an Amazon buy. I pulled my daughter’s hair straight back into a low bun. The wig came with a hairnet which I used as well to cover and collect all of her baby hairs. Using large size bobby pins, I started pulling the hair and pinning it under to try and replicate (the best I could) Anne Wheeler’s hairstyle. Nude tights and nude jazz shoes finish this costume off.
I used this YouTube tutorial to help me figure out how to make it look like the real Anne Wheeler from the Greatest Showman.

The Greatest Showman Costume: Charles Stratton
Complete Charles Stratton Costume | Toy Guns | Horse
Another easy one. Have I mentioned that I love Amazon? Although the costume did come with boot covers, I opted to just wear a pair of knee high boots that I own. The costume run TTS. I normally wear a XS/S. The one I am wearing is an adult SMALL. Another thing that I did not have time to buy, but it would have completed my costume would be two small toy guns. I did however luck out with the toy horse that I found in my kids playroom.

The Greatest Showman Costume: Lettie Lutz (aka: The Bearded Lady)
Lettie Lutz Costume | Purple Dress | Beard and Wig
Not going to lie here. I was shocked when my husband agreed to dressing up as the bearded lady. All this costume required was a quick stop at the local thrift shop. I was looking for a dress (anything with purple tones would work) and it had to be big enough for my husband to wear. Lucky me! $7.00 later I found the dress I was looking for.
We didn’t get shoes for him (as that would be nearly impossible to find size 14 women’s shoes) but it didn’t matter…with a face like that, no one was looking at his feet! Ha! The beard and wig was a local Halloween store find. They came as a package sold together. For his flower crown, I used some flower clips that we had from our daughter’s bow collection. I have found a few dresses that would work for the Lettie Lutz costume for a man (or woman) to wear.

The Greatest Showman Costume: The Strong Man
Baby Strong Man Costume | Adult Strong Man Costume
How cute is this sweet baby? Another easy costume. Amazon buy, keyword search: strongest man baby costume. The outfit came complete with the small dumbell accessory. I was able to fit him into a pair of old black boots that belonged to his big sister. Since trick or treating takes place at night, I also threw a pair of nude color tights onto him for fear that he would get cold. I drew a small mustache using brown eyeliner, and Voila! The World’s Strongest Man!

The Greatest Showman Costume: Phillip Carlyle
Feminine Circus Ringleader Hat | Black Leotard | Red Tutu | Complete Girl Circus Ringleader Costume | Black Tights | Black Boots
I lucked out with this one. My daughter was not interested in wearing any costumes that weren’t a dress. I always save the girls old dance costumes and thought this one would be perfect for Phillip Carlyle. I found the feminine ring leader hat at the local Party City for $5! Black knit tights, black boots and a little red lipstick to complete this look. If I didn’t have the costume, I would do a red tutu, black leotard, and some gold buttons glued to the front of the leotard.

Popcorn Vendor
My brother in law usually tags along for Halloween and is always a good sport when it comes to jumping on the family theme wagon! This year we kept his simple (and I didn’t get a solo photo of him!) shoot! White shirt, black slacks, and a red bow tie and suspenders complete this look. I had a straw hat from a previous Mary Poppins costume that helped tie the look together. We took a cardboard box and cut it down to size, covered it with brown grocery bag paper. Popped some popcorn and threw it into 4 plastic popcorn buckets (we already had these but you can get at the Dollar Store during the summer months)…
We had so much fun dressing up with The Greatest Showman costumes this year! I hope this guide inspires you to get creative and use your imagination when creating The Greatest Showman costumes of your own.
